Who we are
This website (https://danielagnewauthor.com/) is run by author Daniel Agnew. He is currently offering tutoring services for learning English.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Most, if not all, personal data captured either on this website or through dealing with Daniel Agnew will be in relation to tutoring services offered. Personal data is captured for two main reasons:
- To provide a personalised tutoring service to each student. As such, details such as their name, contact email address, primary language, age and interests may be recorded.
- Different payment methods are offered on the website. Some of them have more detailed requirements (such as name and address) which are recorded by third parties in the provision of their services and may be visible to the administrator(s) of this website. If you wish to reduce the personal data you provide, some payment methods such as PayPal may be preferable. PayPal, for example, does not require an address when giving payment.
Where possible, the data infrastructure has been configured to prioritise storing de-identified data or data where personal information has been reduced. For example, using a student’s first name and initial of their last name is the generally preferred method of recording a student’s name.
Some marketing data is captured by visitors to this site by their intereaction with its pages. This is primarily to help match my tutoring services with interested potential students. This is generally done in aggregate statistics reflecting, for example, page views and intereaction with elements of the page. There may be little or no personal data recorded in this way.
Some third party software, plugins, and code such as WordPress plugins, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Tag Manager and Meta Pixel may be active on the website. Where potentially personal data is captured by general site use, it may be captured by these tools. It may not be possible or feasible for this site to remove all traces of intereaction. If you do not wish your intereaction with this site to be monitored, you are advised not to use the services provided and not to browse the site. Nevertheless, if you believe your data has been captured by browsing the site and you wish to have it removed, please advise by way of one of the contact forms on the website.
Comments
Comments will capture the comment you write. They will also capture your name and email address (though the email address will not be displayed publically) and may give the option to provide a website. If you log in with an alternate login, such as WordPress or Meta, then that linked account may be recorded instead of the email address.
Comments may be approved or rejected by the site administrator(s). They may not display immediately and there is no guarantee they will remain on the site.
Contact forms and booking systems
There are contact forms and booking systems available on the site. The primary purpose is to allow site users to communicate with the site owner or administrator(s). Personal information such as name and email address is captured to be able to respond to requests and provide services.
Cookies
You would have seen a cookie bar when you first accessed this site. To make the bar disappear you would have agreed to it. If the bar is still present, it is a constant reminder that cookies may be in use and your continued use of the site is also considered informed and explicit consent to their use.
Cookies may or may not be capturing data on this website. At present, if you do not wish cookies to capture your data, you are advised not to use the site. It may not be possible or feasible for this site to remove all traces of intereaction.
If you believe your data has been captured by cookies and you wish to have it removed, please advise by way of one of the contact forms on the website.
Analytics
Analytics tracking may be active on this site. Tools such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Tag Manager and Meta Pixel may be in use. If you believe your data has been captured by analytics tracking and you wish to have it removed, please advise by way of one of the contact forms on the website.
Who we share your data with
Data is largely retained in-house and only shared with third-parties for the provision of their services. For example, a payment system has access to your payment details to enable payments through the website.
Currently, your data may be shared with the following third-parties:
- WordPress – this website is built and sustained by WordPress. Your intereaction with this website may pass through WordPress infrastructure.
- Akismet – Akismet provides an ant-spam service to my website. Comments, contact forms and site intereaction may be monitored by Akismet to provide anti-spam services.
- WooCommerce – WooCommerce is the basis for payment systems on this website. WooCommerce will likely have access to payment information provided in the provision of payment services on the website. Note – third parties affiliated with WooCommerce, such as Stripe and PayPal, are in use in the provision of payment services. Most payments that aren’t processed through PayPal are processed with Stripe through WooCommerce.
- Google Analytics – data such as interactions on this site or ads you clicked to get here may be sent to Google Analytics. The primary purpose of this data is to tell me how many people (in aggregate figures) have taken actions on the website, for example, that indicate they are likely to join a class or purchase one of my novels.
- Google Ads – data such as interactions on this site or ads you clicked to get here may be sent to Google Ads. The primary purpose of this data is to tell me how many people (in aggregate figures) have taken actions on the website, for example, that indicate they are likely to join a class or purchase one of my novels.
- Google Tag Manager – Google Tag Manager managers the installation of interaction tracking code across this website, such as whether a page was viewed. It sends data downstream to other parties such as Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta / Facebook.
- Meta / Facebook – data such as interactions on this site or ads you clicked to get here may be sent to Meta via a Meta Pixel. The primary purpose of this data is to tell me how many people (in aggregate figures) have taken actions on the website, for example, that indicate they are likely to join a class or purchase one of my novels.
How long we retain your data
General, aggregate, de-identified site data may be retained indefinitely.
Personal data procured for the provision of services will be stored for the duration of services and then for 7 years. Disposal may be done in batches rather than individually. Data may be stored between 7-8 years to faciliate batch processing and deletion. Personal data procured for the provision of services can be deleted on request at the termination of services.
Marketing data that is de-identified may be retained indefinitely.
What rights you have over your data
You have the right to view personal data held about you upon request. It may take time to provide this but will likely be provided within a few days of the request. You may request changes to your personal data and you may request it be deleted – however some personal data if deleted may make the provision of future services difficult or impossible. If I have your personal data, generally speaking, you probably have my business email address. If you have this, you should ideally use it when making a data request.
Generally speaking, it may not be possible to remove you as a part of a count from aggregate statistics (such as page views on the website). If you wish to be removed from general, de-identified, aggregate data you can make a request through one of the contact forms on the website, or if you have my business email, as above, you are advised to use that.
Contact information
You are welcome to use any number of contact forms on this website if you have concerns over data privacy. Here is a link to one of them.
How we protect your data
Data – especially personal data – is largely retained in processing warehouses and generally accessed on a ‘need to know’ basis for accounting and the provision of services. Extracts of non-de-identified personal data are kept to a minimum. The minimum amount of data to link records – if linking is needed – is generally carried out. For example, linking with a de-identified numerical key is preferred. Where this is not possible, linking with a combined key of first name and initial of last name, or email address may be used.
What data breach procedures we have in place
If there is a data breach you will be notified by email as soon as is practically possible.
What third parties we receive data from
Analytic and marketing data may be provided from third party providers such as Meta and Google.
